Dental implants also help to keep your jaw bone in great condition, as when we lose teeth the supporting bone often reduces in density, which can lead to unpleasant consequences.
So, what may reduce the lifespan of dental implants?
Not visiting your dentist for routine checkups and hygiene appointments. A dental implant acts a lot like a natural tooth, but this means that the things that may lead to tooth loss with a natural tooth will also apply to those with dental implants. Allowing plaque to build up, or gum disease to take hold of your oral health can lead to implant failure. Maintaining great oral health and keeping up to date with your checks will avoid this happening.
Reduced bone structure: When your dental implant is placed the dentist will be aware of your bone density and will pass this information to you. When you have had missing teeth for a long period of time it is common for your bone density to decrease. Unfortunately, this may impact the chance of success with dental implants. The good news is, however, that your dentist will be able to assess this for you and discuss the chance of success before your dental implants are placed.
Poor dental implant placement: There’s a lot to be said about picking the best dentist for the job! Many dentists do not deal with oral surgery and therefore dental implants are not something they’re experienced in.
