It's estimated that around one in three people in the UK is scared of the dentist. This is not surprising when you consider that many people have had bad experiences at the dentist in the past. Often, these fears are passed down from our parents or guardians, who may have had their dental trauma. We want you to know that your past trauma with dental care is valid, and, unfortunately, you’ve had this experience. But despite past trauma or fears, you must have professional dental care.
There are several reasons why people may be anxious about going to the dentist. It could be because of a fear of needles, or a fear of pain. For some people, it may be simply because they don't like the idea of someone else being in control of their mouth. Whatever the reason, there are steps you can take to reduce your anxiety and make going to the dentist a more positive experience.
- Talk to your dentist about your fears. They will be understanding and may be able to offer you sedation dentistry or other options to help you feel more relaxed during treatment. Many dentists deal with nervous patients daily, you won’t shock them with your fears.
- Distract yourself during treatment. Bring a book or listen to music through headphones. This will help you to focus on something else and take your mind off of what's happening, and your dentist won’t mind!
- Breathe deeply and slowly. This will help to lower your heart rate and keep you calm.
- Practice positive visualisation. Picture yourself feeling relaxed and comfortable during dental treatment. Remind yourself that you are going to be ok.
- Seek out a "dental fear friendly" dentist. These dentists have special training in helping patients who are scared of the dentist. You can even chat with friends and family and see if they would recommend their dentist. Many people have a fear of dentists and if you can get a referral from someone who was also nervous about dental treatment, that dentist may be a great fit for you.
By following these tips, you can help to reduce your dental anxiety and make going to the dentist a more positive experience. Remember you are not alone with your dental phobia, but there are ways of managing your fears to have a positive experience!
