Did you know you can replace missing teeth with 1 fixed option without replacing all of your teeth individually?
If you’ve been researching tooth replacement and ‘false teeth’, you’ll have come across what is called ‘permanent dentures’. Permanent dentures and denture implants are the nicknames for all on four dentures, or all on six dentures. This treatment is a fantastic way of replacing multiple teeth, in fact it could replace an entire set of teeth! We’re going to be covering all the frequently asked questions about permanent dentures, are they good? What are dental implants and how do all on four dental implants work? Let’s get straight to it!
What are all on four, or all on six dental implants?
Dental implants are a surgically implanted prosthetic tooth and root placed in the jaw bone to recreate a tooth. Once these are healed they act just as normal teeth would, with the same required care. Now these can be done singularly for individual missing teeth, or they can be used to support a denture fitting the gap required.
Who would be a good candidate for permanent dentures?
A good candidate for permanent dentures would be someone who has lost most of their teeth on one arch, whilst many people are able to successfully have dental implants, those with good bone density have the best chance of success. Bone density can be reduced by extensive tooth loss, so it’s a good idea to replace teeth quickly to avoid this happening. Your dentist will conduct an X-Ray and CT scan to assess where the implants could be placed and if this treatment would suit your condition.
Are permanent dentures a good idea?
Permanent dentures are a fantastic idea for those who are suitable candidates, here are just some of the reasons why!
They deliver an even biting pressure
You do not need to remove your denture for cleaning
They help to maintain bone density
Fewer dental implants are needed than full mouth rehab with singular dental implants
Ease when eating and speaking
Great longevity
More cost effective than the cost of full mouth dental implants
Now, of course, all treatments are not without some drawbacks, so let’s cover those also. For those who are nervous about the idea of surgery, unfortunately permanent dentures do require multiple dental implants. This is commonly done in one sitting so you will only be required to go through this once. Another drawback may be that healing could be slower for some people if they have any ongoing health conditions or are a smoker. Don’t worry though, your dentist will discuss your options dependent on your health status and what your desired outcomes are.
