You’ve heard all this talk about dental implants, and probably tonnes of good things about them. But what are the possible problems when it comes to dental implants? First, what is a dental implant? Dental implants are the most natural way to replace missing teeth. A small screw-like implant is surgically placed into the jaw bone, and a prosthetic tooth is attached on top, and that’s it, that’s all there is to the dental implant procedure. Typically, the implant is left to heal for around 3 months before the prosthetic tooth is added, to ensure that the implant has fully healed before adding additional weight.
So what are some of the negatives when it comes to dental implants?
-
Replacing teeth, or missing teeth with dental implants requires good bone density. Unfortunately, if you do not have enough jaw bone left to support dental implants, it may not be possible to successfully implant a new tooth. Any good dental implant specialist will be able to tell you the chances of success prior to the treatment, but it’s worth bearing in mind.

They’re more expensive than other forms of treatment. Dental implants are not the only way to replace missing teeth, you could opt for a denture or a dental bridge. Now while a denture may start from £400 privately or £250 on the NHS, the dental implant cost is much higher. How much is a dental implant? Great question, while it varies on the dentist and location you choose, typically in the UK dental implants cost around £2500 per tooth, and this is our cost here at Dental Concepts. Could you take advantage of dental tourism to drive the cost down? Absolutely, at Dental Concepts we have a hybrid tourism option which allows you to have all of the treatment planning and aftercare in our UK practices, and the implant procedure in our state-of-the-art Mumbai practice. This gives you a fantastic holiday and your dental implants at a much more affordable price.
-
Our third and final drawback to dental implants is that it is a surgical procedure and does require healing. As we mentioned above, before the real prosthetic is placed on top of the implant, there is usually a 3-month weight, to make sure the implant is not only strong enough but it reduces the chance of implant failure. The benefit of treatments such as dentures or a dental bridge is that you can just snap your fingers and it’s did, the same cannot be said for dental implants. This is one aspect that you will have to weigh up when making the decision. The discomfort following the dental implant procedure only usually lasts around 3-7 days.
Have we put you off dental implants? We really hope not! All in all, we truly think dental implants are the best way to replace missing teeth because they do act like natural teeth and have fantastic longevity. Finding a dental implant specialist is key to getting the best out of your dental implants.
